More Than Just Alphas: Welcoming Different Kinds of Men Into Romance

Let’s face it, hunks come in every variety, right? Cowboys, rock stars, CEOs, soldiers—the list goes on and on. When we lose ourselves in a good romance novel, the hero can be just about anyone and we keep reading. We love love in all shapes and forms.

So, for a genre that embraces diversity, why is there such an insistence on men being obsessive alphas?

Look, I’m not saying it’s not sexy for a man to be possessive and dominant. But the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality is a bit stifling. Lately I have read a few fantastic stories with non-alphas, but still, the mainstream standard seems to be that the world isn’t ready for men to be serving their leading ladies. Before my debut, THE SCHOOLTEACHER AND THE SUBMISSIVE, was bought by Simon and Schuster, my agent and I received comments like, “This is wonderful, but women want alpha males.

My characters, William and Cerise, have a DS relationship where the woman is on top. It’s not like William is a pushover–he’s just a submissive. He doesn’t stalk or get possessive with Cerise, but that doesn’t make him any less infatuated with her. He doesn’t try to control her, and yet there are still plenty of conflicts that keep the story moving. So what if he’s not growling at her when they’re in bed? He’s still making her every dream come true and being super swoony in the process. And seriously, who doesn’t want that?

So to be blunt, being a non-alpha doesn’t make a guy a pussy.

I think it’s time for a dichotomy shift. There are some fantastic up and coming books about Dommes and other powerful heroines who happen to have gorgeous and desperate-to-please heroes, so let’s try to get more of that into the mainstream!

Women today are bold, brave, smart and sophisticated, so why can’t we be the ones calling the shots in bed? Who needs a bossy, stubborn brooder when there are heroes willing to throw themselves at a deserving heroine’s feet? Yes, please!

Ladies, stand up and hop on—it’s our turn to be on top.
