24-year old Pax Tate is an asshole.

He’s a tattooed, rock-hard bad-boy with a bad attitude to match.

But he’s got his reasons.

His mother died when Pax was seven, leaving a hole in his heart filled with guilt although he doesn’t understand why. What he does know is that he and his dad are left alone and with more issues than they can count.

As Pax grew up, he tried to be the kid his father always wanted; the perfect golden boy, but it didn’t work. His dad couldn’t overcome his grief long enough to notice and Pax couldn’t keep up the impossible perfect façade.
So he slipped far, far from it.

Now, he uses drugs and women to cope with the ugliness, the black void that he doesn’t want to deal with. If he pretends that the emptiness isn’t there, then it isn’t, right?

And it’s never more apparent than when he meets Mila.
Sweet, beautiful Mila Hill is the fresh air to his hardened frown, the beauty to his ugly heart. He doesn’t know how to not hurt her, but he quickly realizes that he’s got to figure it out because he needs her to breathe.

When memories of his mother’s death resurface from where he’s repressed them for so long, Mila is there to catch him when the guilt starts making sense. Mila is the one…the one who can save him from his broken troubled heart; from his issues, from the emptiness.

But only if he can stop being an asshole long enough to allow it.

He knows that. And he’s working on it.

But is that enough to make her stay?

Georgana's Review

I read Courtney Cole’s If you Stay over a year ago and absolutely loved it. When it was decided the SubClub was going to do an author day for her, I jumped at the chance to review it. My review on goodreads was short and sweet, so I had to dig back into the book to make this review meatier. Thinking I would just skim the pages to refresh my memory, I found myself totally rereading the entire book. I remember now why I loved this story so much. It was just as good the second time around as it was the first.

If you Stay is the journey of Pax and Mila. It is one of the few stories that I have read that the honesty of the characters drives the plot. If you are scratching your head with that statement, what I mean is that throughout Pax and Mila’s relationship very little games are played. The two of them are honest to a fault even to the detriment of their relationship. There were even times that I was like…NO don’t tell her…..don’t be that honest yet….are you kidding me, if you share that she will run. But the strength that Ms. Cole wrote Mila was unwavering. Mila accepted the honesty and for a lack of a better term just rolled with it.

Pax is the town bad boy, but driven more by his life choices of drugs and sex then just being a douche. His childhood trauma has not let him put away the ghosts that haunt him so his outlet of drugs and sex is a tool used to just forget. Mila is the town good girl. She too has been dealt her own set of trauma but the way she chose to navigate through it was in a much healthier way. When Mila saves Pax’s life one night, they both realize that they want more from each other and Pax tries to walk on the straight and narrow to gain not only Mila’s trust but her love.

I must say I loved Pax….again, his honesty and desire to be better was great to read. His sessions with the therapist were eye opening and as he opened up to the therapist we too got a glimpse as to why Pax has become the man he is. In fact, their sessions were a huge part of me falling for this broken yet beautiful man.

If you Stay was a wonderful book about how someone, when truly loved, can find redemption in their selves. You see Pax needed to not only get over his past, but he needed to find value in himself. Mila was an amazing catalyst in that journey for Pax. Ms. Cole wrote a beautiful love story and I really hope you can take the time to read it for yourself….Pax and Mila will be two characters that won’t soon leave your heart.

About the Author 1

CourtneyBio, Black and White

Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
