Beautiful Disaster

Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby wants—and needs—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

“He drowns in his dreams…An exquisite extreme I know…He’s as damned as he seems…And more heaven than a heart could hold…And if I try to save him…My whole world could cave in…It just ain’t right…It just ain’t right…”

My Review

Abby Abernathy was trying to run away from her past in Kansas and wanting to create a new life for herself at Eastern. Travis Maddox is exactly what she was trying to avoid.  But as fate would have it, these two crashed into each other and their lives were never the same again.

“When we met, something inside both of us had changed, and whatever that was, it made us need each other.  For reasons unknown to me, I was his exception, and as much as I had tried to fight my feelings, he was mine.”

The Only Exception – Paramore

“I knew the second I met you that there was something about you I needed.  Turns out it wasn’t something about you at all.  It was just you.”

I’ve read this book a few times and each time I fall in love with it a little more than the last.  I initially read Beautiful Disaster in March 2012.  I actually had this one on my TBR for a while but I always seemed to find a way to put off starting it.  A lot of the reviews I read all spoke of a disturbing scene that happens and I honestly didn’t want to find out.  I’m the type of reader that lives for the happily ever after.  Yes, I’m okay with the angst and work to get there but the word “disturbing” threw me a bit.   That being said, this was one of the first books I read last year that I really, truly loved everything about.  Good and bad.

When I finished reading it I found myself thinking, what would it be like to love someone and have someone love you so intensely? So fiercely that if you weren’t around one another, both of your worlds would come crashing down?  Let’s be completely honest.  It’s scary, irrational, and it would freak me the hell out.  But then I also realized….To be so completely loved and so passionately…Isn’t that what we all hope to have in our lives?

Yes, Travis is crazy, intense, and yes, he is definitely not a relationship type of guy when I first get introduced to him.  But something about Abby changed him.  I don’t mean some sort of superficial change where you change for a day and go back to your old ways.  She somehow managed to reach him on a whole other level that no woman could every get to no matter how hard they tried.  She touched his soul and while she tried to deny it as long as she could, there was no way she could deny that her own heart was just as much his.

“I know we’re fucked up, all right? I’m impulsive and hot-tempered, and you get under my skin like no one else.  You act like you hate me one minute, and then you need me the next.  I never get anything right, and I don’t deserve you…but I fucking love you, Abby.  I love you more than I’ve loved anyone or anything, ever.  When you’re around, I don’t need booze, or money, or the fighting, or the one-night stands…all I need is you.  You’re all I think about.  You’re all I dream about.  You’re all I want…”

There are a few times in this book I caught myself feeling super emotional as I was reading.  It was a bit much to stomach at times how intense Travis was, but I understood that was the only way he knew how to be.  While I get Abby having reservations about their relationship, I didn’t want her to keep running from him!  I could feel his poor heart being ripped out each time.  He was trying so hard to be the man she needed him to be but she kept bolting.  I mean, the poor guy wouldn’t go to sleep because he was so scared she was going to run!  That completely broke my heart for him.

Though when it was all said and done, they had each other and that is really the only thing that ever made sense.  It didn’t matter if the whole world was against them because in the end, their love was able to overcame it all.   They had their happily ever after and there was no other way I could’ve asked for their love story to end.

“I. Am. Yours. Mrs. Travis Maddox, forever and always.”

5 Beautiful Stars

“Oh and I don’t know…I don’t know what he’s after…But he’s so beautiful… Such a beautiful disaster…And if I could hold on…Through the tears and the laughter…Would it be beautiful…Or just a beautiful disaster…” Beautiful Disaster by Kelly Clarkson
