Staking his claim tessa bailey

NYPD sniper Matt Donovan is in Hell. Instead of driving his best friend’s little sister home from college, he’s stuck with her roommate—a fresh-faced ray-of-sunshine with a body that makes grown men weep. There’s no way he’ll allow himself to taint the little vixen, no matter how hard she tries to tempt him, so he resigns himself to the longest—and hardest—drive of his life.

Matt’s obvious attraction suits grad student Lucy Mason just fine. She had no idea her brother’s best friend was so deliciously hot. Knowing he’d never have his wicked way with his buddy’s sister, she lies about her identity and seduces him. But Matt’s no fumbling college boy. His desires run deep—and dark—and he wants to teach Lucy what wicked really means.

Matt’s demanding appetites only make Lucy want more. But when her cover’s blown, he’s furious—even as his hunger for her becomes insatiable. Matt can’t trust anyone, least of all himself. And he knows all too well that darkness always destroys the light…

Staking His Claim is the 5th book in Tessa’s Line of Duty series. The story centers on Matt Donovan and Lucy Mason. Both have been peripheral characters in the earlier Line of Duty Books.

Matt is a NYPD officer, a trained military sniper who is now assigned to the ESU and is a friend and co-worker of previous series heroes, Daniel Chase (Officer Off Limits) and Brent Mason (Asking for Trouble).

Lucy is Brent’s younger sister who has just received her Master’s in French in Art History from Syracuse. Because Brent has an obligation with his fiancée, he has asked Matt to pick up Lucy and her roommate Sasha to bring them back to the city.

As the book opens, Lucy’s roommate is telling her that she is blowing her off to spend the week with her boyfriend. Coupled with the fact that her brother Brent is sending his friend to pick her up instead of himself, Lucy is feeling a little letdown; but in walks Matt and BOOM! She wants him. 6 years of safe and studying is over – she wants him. But knowing that he will not touch her and that he has heard that she is a “nuisance” she decides to be Sasha so that she can try to seduce him.

Staking His Claim might just be my favorite book of the series. I felt like the struggles that Lucy and Matt faced were things that they might have been able to control if they knew how.

The sex? So for me it was off-the-charts hot – in the sense that Matt had what he called a “dark side” and it came down to the fact that he liked control (dominate). Lucy, looking for adventure, being incredibly attracted to Matt wanted the same thing. She was willing to submit to his control, but was also willing to stand up to him in order to maybe get a little more punishment and also as the situation required, for emotion well-being.

There is a lot miscommunication/misunderstanding in this burgeoning relationship. As a sniper, Matt is trained to be able to interpret the body language of a target – it’s a matter of life and death. But in his relationship, he sees the nuance of a look or gesture and doesn’t ask questions.  It leads to some heartache.

Lucy, while she tries to be open and honest, can’t seem to communicate with her own brother. She is hanging her hat on the fact that she is a nuisance or a burden to him and wants to get a job as soon as she can, to help take the burden off his shoulders.

I really just loved this book, which I knew that I would, but just how much has taken me by surprise. I’ve read a lot of books in my lifetime, but I don’t think that I have EVER squealed because of an event in a book.

PS – There are a couple of “Back to the Future” references in the book. After you read the book, if you don’t mind, come back here to post a “Gigawatt”?

About The Author

tessa bio

Thank you for your interest in my books! I’m Tessa and I live in the crazy, loud, overcrowded borough of Brooklyn, New York. I love it here. This city is a constant source of inspiration, which is why I’ve decided to set my most recent books in the Line of Duty Series here. I moved to New York when I was eighteen, the day after I graduated high school. Threw my suitcase in the back of a Chevrolet Cavalier and drove across the country to find my adventure. I’m still finding it, little by little.
Thank you for being a part of it.
