Synopsis 1

A gripping standalone adult contemporary romance about finding yourself while taking a second chance at your first love…

Dakota Nakos was always the resilient, strong-willed achiever. But when her father dies and she’s entrusted with the family’s casino, she feels vulnerable, scared, and more than a little emotional –not exactly the best time to see an old lover she’s never really gotten over.

Dakota once meant the world to Shane Garrity. Then suddenly he left town to train as a U.S. Marshal, and their love for each other crashed into a memory. Now he’s come home for her father’s funeral, and one look at the girl he left behind stirs up both memories and regrets, and reignites a fire he feared he’d lost forever.

Dakota may be the same driven girl she always was, but she’s also changed in ways neither could have anticipated. She’s not just a young woman searching for own identity in the Native American community in which she was raised, but one questioning her new life outside her father’s shadow. Above all she wonders if Shane can push past her weakened defenses to rekindle what they once had, or whether the intense blaze between them will ultimately reduce her heart to ashes.

Excerpt 1

She closed her eyes on a sharp breath, looking soft and vulnerable.

Because I couldn’t help myself, my fingers left her chair and glided up her arms to her neck. Her breaths released from her lips in short pants and I considered touching my mouth to hers.

Would she let me? Would she want me to?

“Yes,” she whispered, the heat of her breaths warming the tiny sliver of air still lingering between us. “But that’s in the past. We had our chance and I . . . I got over you. So let’s leave it there.”

My stomach completely flipped over. “You got over me?”

I studied her lips edge to edge, and they trembled in response. She was so not over me.

I didn’t know what the hell was driving me. I just knew I didn’t like hearing those words. Not one damn bit.

“You got over me?” I growled as my fingers gripped the nape of her neck.

My lips brushed the line of her jaw and she shivered.

“Shane, don’t. Please,” she mumbled, her hands at my chest. “You’ll just leave again and I can’t . . . I can’t . . .”

She sounded so helpless and sad. For the first time she was allowing me to see exactly what she might have been feeling, might’ve gone through five years ago. She sounded wrecked—as wrecked as I had been.

My lips trailed to her ear. “Angel.”

Dear readers we are very lucky to be getting another Christina Lee book so soon after the amazing There We Stand. This time we get another beautifully written story of a second chance at first love and the ties that bind a community together.

With Two of Hearts we return to the Nakos family, their tribal community and the aftermath of a horrible tragedy with the loss of the heart and soul of their family. The story kicks off with a funeral and grabs your emotions by the throat and continues to hold them till the last page. This author certainly knows how to pull your heart-strings.

“But I’m here now, telling you how I feel.” “Yeah, and how long will you stay? How long before you realize you have a job and a life to get back to?” He moved closer, pressing my back against the brick wall. “Maybe I wonder if my life is supposed to be here, with you. Maybe I feel completely alive again around you.” My eyes sprang up to meet his. His words stirred something so deeply rooted inside of me that my lips began trembling. “And maybe all the implications of that are only hitting me right now, standing here in front of you,” he growled. “Goddamn it, Dakota.”

I have to say how much I loved Dakota. Her strength and resilience was for me a highlight of her story. How she stood tall amongst the doubters and held her head high had me feeling so proud of her that I kind of forgot she was a fictional character.

As for Shane….yum just yum. Yes I fell for another Lee hero. He’s a US Marshall, a slightly burnt out one but he’s still willing to help Dakota and her family by looking into her father’s death. For that alone I would fall, but it’s the little things he does and says that will make you melt for him.

“We never really had a chance to get started back in college,” he said, narrowing the sliver of space between us. My heart battered relentlessly with nerves and desperation. “I’ve missed you, angel.”

Together these two are hot and a force to be reckoned with. The chemistry is undeniable and I loved seeing them give into the old feelings and watching new ones grow and become part of who they are now. They have both grown up since they had their first chance at love years ago, but seeing them come together as adults is wonderful is the best word to describe it.

“If you think that I’m going to let another year go by and not tell you what I’ve been feeling—what I’ve been thinking—then you’d be wrong.”

As the story unfolds, we get a glimpse of the internal politics of the tribal nation and we see that they are just like any other community. They have internal conflicts, want to see that their values and ways continue and have the realisation that times change and so to a degree must they. Watching Dakota’s mother stand up the hierarchy gave me chills. I have never wanted to hug a character so much as I did then. I love her.

A lot happens in this book from death to love. But to me, the overriding message is to never give up on what or who you love. Fight for it with all you have because you never know when you could lose it forever.

We also get a visit from Rachel and Kai from Whisper to Me and I have to say I loved seeing them again and was jumping with joy over their news.

One of the reasons I love this authors work so much is that I totally forget that they are fictional characters and get so involved in their world that when I finish the book it feels like I’ve walked away from friends. Christina Lee writes books that become instant re-reads and keepers.

Whether if this is your first taste of this author or you are a huge fan like me, this is a book you will fall for.
